Worldwide Boy Bands
Energy: A Taiwanese hip pop boy band formed in 2002. The original band consisted of five males, namely Milk, Ady, Toro, Penny and Joe. Toro and Milk left the band in 2003 and 2005 respectively. Xiao Gang joined the band in mid 2007. The band has now officially disbanded since 2009.
Dru Hill: An American singing group, most popular during the late 1990s, whose repertoire included R and B, soul, and gospel music. Founded in Baltimore, Maryland, and active since 1992, Dru Hill recorded seven Top 40 hits, and is best known for the R and B #1 hits “In My Bed”, “Never Make a Promise”, and “How Deep Is Your Love”. Tamir “Nokio” Ruffin was the group’s founder; his bandmates included main lead singer Mark “Sisq” Andrews, Larry “Jazz” Anthony, and James “Woody Rock” Green. Signing to Island Records through Haqq Islam’s University Records imprint, Dru Hill released two successful LPs before separating for a period from late 1999 to 2002, during which time Sisq and Woody released solo albums. While Woody’s Soul Music LP was a moderate success in the gospel music industry, Sisq’s Unleash the Dragon LP and its hit single “Thong Song” were major pop successes, and established Sisq as a household name outside of Dru Hill.
Los Chicos: The band was created by Eric Laboy in 1978 to 1985, with the name Encuentro. Due to a political campaign slogan, the name was changed to Los Chicos, which translates to The Kids. They enjoyed huge success during the early 1980s, particularly in Puerto Rico and Central America. A movie (Conexin Caribe) was filmed and a tv show hosted weekly on Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV. Many songs, including Puerto Rico son Los Chicos, Ave Mara and Mamma Mia became radio favorites, and memorabilia items like posters were mass produced. Los Chicos became national sponsors for Malta Corona and Mahones Savage (Savage Jeans).
Five: An English boyband put together in 1997 by the same team that formed the Spice Girls. The five members were Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, J Brown, Richard ‘Abs’ Breen and Sean Conlon. Signed by Simon Cowell, they enjoyed great success worldwide, but particularly in the UK, parts of Europe and Asia, Russia, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. They split up on 27 September 2001, after selling almost 20 million records, and having eleven top ten singles and four top ten albums in the UK. Four of the five original members, Scott, Abs, Ritchie and J briefly reformed the group without Sean on 27 September 2006, but just seven months later, having failed to gain enough record company interest, Five made an announcement via their official website they would again disband.
Damage: Led by Andrez Harriott, Damage were one of several urban R and B outfits who capitalised on Mark Morrison’s international breakthrough during the mid 1990s.[citation needed] The quintet was formed at school at the beginning of the decade when Harriott, Jade Jones, Core Richards, Rahsaan J Bromfield and Noel Simpson were all teenagers. They sent a demo tape of a cover version of the Jackson Five song “Anything” to Jazz Summers of Big Life Records in early 1995. Although Summers was impressed by the quality of their singing and harmonies, he waited eighteen months before issuing their first record.[citation needed] Even though it charted outside the Top 40 it achieved excellent reviews and Damage were born.
Eastyle: A Taiwanese Boy Band that does street dancing, Hip hop and R&B. They were first heard on the radio with the song ‘You are My Most Loved Person’, which was written by the composer – Yong Bang, but was sung a cappella. They were first in a group called Beggars with other friends that all had a passion for street dancing. After stopping for about a year, they came up with a new name for their group consisting of 4 members – Eastyle.
