Selling Hip Hop Beats- Where to Begin
First of all I’d like to thank you for reading this article. My name is Kyle Artzt, also referred to as HB of Beats4Legends. I wrote this article in order to help producers around the world learn more about selling beats online without a label or a connection. It’s not nearly as hard as you might think and it’s a highly profitable business!
I was about 10 years old when I began my journey as a beat salesman. I wanted nothing more than to earn a full time income making music without signing a record deal. I didn’t want to be tied down by a contract that sabotaged my rights and cut me out of my profits.
The first thing you need to know as a beat salesman is obviously the answer to a simple yet important question: what are the best websites for selling beats? There are plenty of websites online for you to license your instrumentals, but my personal favorites are listed below (in order of effectiveness).
1. Soundclick- This is the best website for selling beats online in my opinion. If you Google “beats”, you’ll find that Soundclick is the first authority site that comes up. More than 1,000,000 producers are currently signed up on Soundclick.com and it has almost always been the first choice of producer’s trying to market their beats. If you don’t have a Soundclick account, you need to sign up immediately.
2. MySpace- I love MySpace because there are an endless number of hungry rappers on MySpace that are constantly looking for beats. Unlike Soundclick, there are no charts for beat salesman, and so it’s harder for rappers to find producers. This actually works to your advantage because the rappers on this site are less likely to know where to find producers, which lowers your competition.
3. MyBeatShop- This website is well known for it’s usability and effectiveness. I like MyBeatShop because they allow you to upload your beats. They also do you the favor of tagging and protecting your instrumentals which helps assure that you’re beats won’t get stolen. They deal with delivery and contracts, so that takes out a large portion of your work right there.
These are just the simple basics for producers trying to get their feet wet in the beat selling game. Click the links in our resource box to start reading up on the more advanced/hidden information.
Good luck!
