Why The Song Was Written

The song, and “We Are the Champions” were written due to an event that happened on the 1977 British Tour. The band had played a show at Stafford’s Bingley Hall and had performed the customary encore and gone off stage. The crowd ceased clapping and sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. Brian May said ‘we were just completely knocked out and taken aback – it was quite an emotional experience really, and I think these chant things are in someway connected with that’.

The song is merely 2 minutes long and was written by Brian May and obviously sung by Freddie Mercury. It was released on the B-side of WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS on 7th October, 1977.

One version was used as the opening track on their 1977 album News of the World. This version features a stamp-stamp-clap-pause beat. The stamping effects were produced by the band overdubbing the sounds of themselves stomping and clapping many times and introducing delay effects to produce a sound like a lot of people were contributing.
