Preserving Your Blu-ray DVD Collection

Regular DVDs are making way for high-definition Blu-ray versions that bring even more realism to the world of film. Although Blu-ray discs are slightly more stable than their predecessors, they are not immune to skips and freezing. To ensure these movies will run seamlessly for years to come, take the time to protect them before the first play.

Standard DVDs have a tendency to scratch quite easily, whereas the coating on a Blu-ray disc provides a higher level of protection. Because of this they are less likely to incur damage. Dust and debris can usually be removed by gently wiping the surface with a micro-fiber cloth. Micro-fiber is used to clean computer monitors, glasses, and other delicate items and is sold in most electronics or department stores, but an equivalent material may be substituted if necessary.

As with standard DVDs, Blu-ray discs should always be cleaned by moving the cloth from the center to the outer edge, rather than wiping around the surface. If imperfections still remain, dip the micro-fiber in a bit of water. There are several cleaners on the market meant for this purpose, but the surface can be easily ruined by the wrong chemical so it is wise to stick to a simpler method.

One common sense but important reminder is to take care not to leave fingerprints on a DVD. Always pick up discs by the opening in the middle or by holding the outside edges. A single fingerprint on a disc could interfere with performance.

If the DVD continues to experience play-back issues after home remedies are exhausted, the damage may be more severe. In this case, the surface might require more invasive solutions. Do-it-yourself options include a buffer that can be used at home or, to avoid further trial and error, a trained professional may be consulted to correct the affected areas.

DVDs should always be stored in their original cases. Even pouches designed to hold sets of discs increase the risk of wear and damage. A pile of loose discs on top of the DVD player is an invitation for trouble.

Blu-rays should never be left in hot temperatures or in direct sun as this can cause warping. Additionally, temperature fluctuation and varying levels of moisture over an extended period of time may affect DVD quality. A lesser known fact is that discs should be kept standing along the shelf rather than stacked flat. This will maintain the integrity of the Blu-ray.

Many cautious consumers wait until the buzz dies down before trying the latest technology, and now it is clear that Blu-ray is not just another quick fad. Blu-ray offers realism that almost equates to 3D and a partnership with high-definition televisions and, as a result, most people are becoming comfortable with the idea of replacing standard DVDs with this new medium. The life of the DVD has been long enough for most to experience the effects of poor care and handling, so now is the time to take steps in preventing history from repeating itself.
