One Man’s Junk Is Another Man’s Treasure

My brother, who lives in the capital city of California, used to be a faithful garage sale attendee. His own garage was jam-packed with stuff he’d found at ‘an unbelievable bargain’. His house was full too. When he moved to a smaller place he had to rent two full-sized storage units just for his ‘extra’ stuff!

When he came home one day with an armful of leaflet holders I questioned his buying tactics. He is well known for getting good deals (able bargainer) and, in fact, he had picked up these plastic displays for zero… zip… nada. I figured he had something in mind.

Asked what he had planned for these advertising aids designed to hold brochures he had an answer ready. He was going to use them to advertise his OWN garage sale. He was planning to get rid of some of these things he had accumulated through his garage-sale addiction. It sounded like a good plan.

A few months later he found a very nice woman, fell in love and moved into her place. I agreed to take over the place where he’d been living and, since he didn’t need any of the furniture or appliances at his new digs he left it all behind. That included a garage full of items of every imaginable form and fashion. He told me, though, that he would empty the garage as soon as possible.

True to his word the garage was emptied and again useable within a few months. I was even able to get my car parked in there! That may have been the first time that particular car-parking area was used for its intended purpose… vehicle protection.

I appreciated the fact that he saw fit to leave some of his well-maintained clothes in one of the closets, all hung with care on nice wooden hangers. Our being the same size when growing up was always a bonus for me. Both of my brothers provided me with quality ‘hand-me-downs’.

Now my brother and I live half a world apart. When I retired I made the move from Sacramento to Cebu. He’s still there, and when I made my move he had to come and clear out the house. He ended up renting two additional storage units, for a total of four. It makes me wonder… when is enough too much?
