How to fit your custom earplugs

0

Buying a set of custom earplugs is the first step to protecting your hearing, and hopefully the company you bought them from will have explained how to use them. But in case they didn’t, here is a quick stage by stage explanation.

How to insert your earplugs

The right ear

Your custom earplug will have a section that enters the ear canal and a flat section across the top of the hearing protector. The flat section will eventually rest against the tragus.

The plug for your right ear should be marked in red, or with the letter ‘R’. To insert it into your ear, take hold of it with your right hand, grasping it between your forefinger and thumb, slide your thumb so that it is touching the flat outer section.

With your left hand, reach over and gently pull your right ear upwards. Put the tip of the hearing protector into the right ear canal and rotate backwards by just over 180 degrees. Wiggle the earplug slightly until it fits comfortably and snugly in your ear. The flat part of the hearing protector should be sitting against your tragus.

Left hand side

Again, your custom earplug will have a section that enters the ear canal and a flat section across the top of the hearing protector. The flat section will eventually rest against the tragus.

The left earplug can be identified by being marked in blue, or with the letter ‘L’. Pick it up between your thumb and forefinger and place your thumb by the flattened section.

With your right hand, reach over and gently pull your left ear upwards. Place the hearing protector into the ear canal and rotate backwards, whilst exerting a little pressure. It will just slip into the ear canal. Once its in there hold your outer ear with your left hand and give it a bit of a wiggle. The hearing protector should be sitting inside the ear canal with a good seal.

You may find that it helps to add a drop of otoform cream on the outside of the hearing protector for the first time you use it or after you have cleaned it. Place a small amount of cream onto a clean finger and smear it over the hearing protector.

This will not only make it easier to slide the earplugs into your ears, but you will find that it helps to improve the quality of the seal between your ear canal and the custom earplug.

Earplug removal

Removal is very straight forward and easy. Simply use your thumb to gently push upwards at the base of your ear. You will find that the earplug will slide out of your ear and drop into your hand. Use the same process to remove the earplug from your other ear.
