How Healthy is Organic?
“Organic” is one of the words that everyone is using these days. New businesses and old businesses alike are trying to jump on the organic bandwagon and promote organic products. The range of organic products on the market today is overwhelming, with options ranging from organic dog food to organic clothing. But beyond all the marketing hype, is buying organic really that important? Let’s find an answer to that question.
The word “organic” typically refers to the way that foods and fibers are grown and processed. Meats, eggs, poultry, and dairy products that are labeled as “organic” come from animals that were fed organic meal and were not given any sort of antibiotic or hormone supplements. Produce that is labeled “organic” was grown without the use of any pesticides or chemicals.
Many pesticides and chemicals, which are used in producing non-organic products, are harmful to humans and animals. A number of people develop allergies to these chemicals because of overexposure and dont even know it. They spend thousands of dollars on doctors and medication and continue eating the same products.
Organic juices and baked goods contain fewer ingredients than non-organic options. Organic items contain fewer preservatives than non-organic foods. I know not everyone feels this way, but I don’t like putting anything in my body that I cannot pronounce. If you haven’t yet taken a look at food labels, I highly recommend it. Then, research ingredients with strange names and what the potential problems associated with these products can be. The results will surprise you and likely help you see why organic popularity is increasing.
In addition to being healthier, using organic products is also better for the environment. When farmers choose to farm organic produce and livestock, they lessen the amount of chemicals that end up in our Earth. With ecological problems like global warming, water pollution, and air pollution, it’s important to look for options that can make a difference, like buying organic.
Many people report that they feel that organic fruits and vegetables taste better than the non-organic alternatives. Even though taste is subjective, most people agree that the taste of chemicals, pesticides, and preservatives isn’t good. Try tasting an organic apple, and see the difference for yourself. You will likely never want to go back to buying conventionally grown apples ever again.
Organic food is also higher in vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting antioxidants, making it a more nutritious alternative to the foods that are conventionally grown.
Buying organic helps to protect our health and our earth. While you may not want to spend the little bit of extra money for organic products, in the long-term, the benefits outweigh the costs. They pay off in the end with less medical bills, better overall health, and less toxic chemicals in the world around us.
Even though many people think organic is always more expensive, that isn’t always true. If you figure out where and when to shop, you can actually find some great deals on organic items that can save you money. Some conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables don’t require use of pesticides or chemicals, making them better for you than other items. So while you do not need to buy the organic version of everything, it doesn’t hurt.
