Basic Pieces For How To Study The Guitar

It is relatively easy to learn how to play the guitar, which is the main reason for it being the first choice of many young people. It is also a highly versatile instrument and can be used to accompany many different styles of music.

To play the guitar it is necessary to perform two completely different tasks at the same time, one with the Left hand and another with the Right hand. Most people use their Right hand to strum the strings, producing the notes which the Left hand fingers. Someone who is naturally Left-handed will often choose a ‘reverse strung’ guitar. This means that the guitar is conventionally strung and tuned, but in the opposite direction. Chords are then played with the Right hand, and the strumming is done with the Left. Sir Paul McCartney is a well-known example, and in the notes which follow this should be borne in mind, reading Right for Left and vice-versa.

The first five minutes of the very first lesson for a complete beginner should not involve holding a guitar. Everyone should spend five minutes every day performing this exercise before starting any further practice.

To train the Left (or Chord-playing) hand: take an ordinary sponge ball (solid is better than hollow, a tennis ball can also be used). Squeeze it as hard as you can, and let go. Repeat, building up speed and developing regular rhythms (e. G. Three beats in a bar, four beats in a bar). You will need a good sense of tempo before long, so this is good practice.

The Right hand needs to be trained to perform a different task. Place your right palm flat on a table or other hard surface. Now practice lifting just one finger at a time, while keeping the rest of your hand flat. Try making repetitive patterns of finger movement, perhaps lifting any two fingers simultaneously, and build up different patterns and speeds.

These exercises are designed to encourage the strength and dexterity of the lesser-used muscles at the base of your fingers in each hand, and will make it easier for you to perform the different tasks you need to play the guitar well. Very soon you’ll discover that you can perform both these exercises at the same time.

The Chords which are used to accompany the melody line of the song are formed by placing your fingers immediately behind the Frets which are spaced at regular intervals the full length of the Neck of the guitar. You may decide that a Plectrum suits your style of strumming.

You’ll find that the vast majority of songs can be accompanied with as little as three chords. These are called the ‘related’ chords of any given key and generally are based on do, fa and so of the scale. With these you’ll soon be playing a large number of songs and can quickly add more.

The one thing which is vital is the discipline of setting aside time for regular daily practice, even if you can only spare five minutes or so. Practice has to be a habit rather than something which needs conscious effort. With regular practice you will soon discover that the only reference book you need is any of the comprehensive, easy to follow books with diagrams of all the basic chords and which fingers to use.

Some guitars are solid (as opposed to the acoustic variety, which depends on a hollow space to produce volume). These include the four-string bass guitar, and the sound is reproduced electrically. These have the advantage of special effects such as ‘fuzz’, and ‘bending’ notes with a tremolo arm, or using a foot pedal to overlay an upper (or lower) octave.
