An Accepted American Novelist’s Writings That Were Turned Into Films
One of America’s most adored writers is John Grisham. Since 1989, his books have sold over 250 million copies globally. He has authored 17 legal fiction books with a new legal fiction due out in November 2009, 4 non-legal fiction writings and one non-fiction book. There have been 10 films made from his works so far with one more expected in 2012.
His 2nd tale, “The Firm”, was the first story to be completed into a motion picture back in 1993. In this show, starring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman, a youthful Harvard Law School graduate begins working at a rather suspicious Memphis law firm. In that same year of 1993, a second John Grisham book to film came out, “The Pelican Brief” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.
“The Client” came out in 1994. This motion picture follows an 11 year old boy who accidentally witnesses a suicide and finds himself being chased by the mafia for what they imagine he may have learned from the dying man. Starring Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and the late Brad Renfro.
The very first published and the one that many think to be Grisham’s most excellent story to date is “A Time to Kill”. This storyline was made into a motion picture in 1996. The picture introduced a new and forthcoming performer in the lead role, Matthew McConaughey, also starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Another movie from 1996 was “The Chamber” starring Chris O’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway.
In 1997, “The Rainmaker” starring Matt Damon as a brand new lawyer who takes on the case of a boy turned down for medical treatment by a powerful insurance corporation. In 1998, the only movie from Grisham that was based upon an non published manuscript was released, “The Gingerbread Man” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr.
2 of the non-legal fiction stories by Grisham have also been made into films. “A Painted House” came out in 2003 and in 2004, the holiday favorite, “Christmas with the Kranks”, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, based upon the story “Skipping Christmas”.
“The Runaway Jury” came out in 2003. This picture starred Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. Grisham’s 21st story, “The Associate”, just released as a book in January 2009, will be released as a movie in 2012.
Grisham has undeniably been one of the most admired and fruitful authors in the recent past. With 22 books out and one more intended for November 2009, 10 movies and another planned for 2012, he has never failed to entertain us.
