All You Need To Know About The Tenor Voice
Throughout history we have seen a number of fantastic tenor voices, ranging from the time of the Castrati to Counter tenor, Lyric Tenor, Dramatic Tenor and one more: the drawing room tenor. I usually hold the latter as separate to the others as it is a lighter, more limited range tenor.
The voice is one of the most amazing things on earth, it can reach into our souls and take us to many far away places. Certainly it can also make us upset and sad as well, all of these things make the human voice unique and a rollercoaster on our emotions, and we love it.
In an opera where the story is being unfolded before your eyes and ears, you can be in the clouds one moment and on the floor the next. The colour of the music underlying the voice takes whatever emotional crutch you thought you had in place, and pulls it firmly out from underneath you.
The tenor voice it has to be said is the most popular and has always had an adoring and fanatical fan base for the said tenor to hold in his hands and take them with him to wherever the music leads them too. Throw in dashing good looks, acting ability and charisma and charm and you have a very volatile and dangerous mix for the female fraternity to cope with, But they love it, and rightly so (us males just lower our bottom jaw and wish it was us).
So from Giovanni Battista Rubini to Rolando Villazon and beyond there is a wealth of musical talent to dig into and have your rich of fill. But I will warn you it is addictive, once you start really listening to a range of lovely voices and start comparing, your curiosity will drive you on to find yet more of the gems that are out there. And there are hundreds to choose from I’m sure .
I will be honest: I don’t think that’s a bad thing! After all, I also share the love, the passion and the allure of the tenor voice. If you don’t have a chance to see a tenor sing live, then try to get hold of a video or sound recording to bring the magic to you.
I’ve truly enjoyed listening to tenors throughout the years, and would love to do justice to as many as I can in time. The project will take a long time and will be constantly growing, but will be extremely rewarding and pleasurable. Please join me at http://www.tenorvoice.net . I’m creating a Facebook page so we can talk tenor, please go to http://www.facebook.com: the page id to join is Tenor Voice.
